Seasonal Homecare Tips: Get Your Apartment Ready for Winter!

As autumn settles into Northeast Ohio, colder temperatures, freezing rain, snow, and icy winds are just around the corner. A little preparation now can help keep your apartment comfortable, protect your belongings, and prevent costly maintenance problems during the winter months.
This month, we’re sharing practical winter homecare tips to help you stay warm, save energy, and protect your apartment throughout the Ohio winter.
1. Keep the Heat In and the Cold Out
Drafty windows and doors can make your apartment uncomfortable and increase heating costs.
Check your windows: Make sure windows are completely closed and locked. Locking them can help create a tighter seal.
Watch for drafts: If you notice cold air coming through windows or doors, contact management so we can determine whether weatherstripping or other repairs are needed.
Use curtains wisely: Close curtains at night to help retain heat. Open them during sunny daytime hours to let natural warmth inside.
Keep vents clear: Do not block heating vents or radiators with furniture, curtains, or storage boxes. Good airflow helps your heating system work efficiently.
Please do not install permanent window coverings, apply adhesive weatherproofing products, or make modifications to windows and doors without management approval.
2. Prevent Frozen Pipes
Freezing temperatures can cause pipes to burst, resulting in serious water damage to your apartment and neighboring units.
Maintain indoor heat: Keep your thermostat at a consistent, reasonable temperature, even when you leave home. Never turn the heat completely off during winter.
Open cabinet doors: During extreme cold, open the doors beneath kitchen and bathroom sinks, especially where plumbing is located along exterior walls.
Report cold spots: Let management know if you notice unusually cold areas near plumbing or if your heating system is not working properly.
Know the warning signs: Reduced water flow, unusual pipe noises, or a lack of running water during freezing weather may indicate a frozen pipe.
If you suspect frozen pipes, contact management promptly. Never use an open flame to thaw pipes. If a pipe bursts or water begins leaking, report the emergency immediately and follow any emergency instructions provided by management.
3. Use Your Heating System Safely
Space heaters, candles, and other supplemental heating devices can create fire hazards when used improperly.
Keep combustible materials, including bedding, clothing, and curtains, away from heating equipment.
Never leave portable space heaters unattended or operating while you sleep. Use only devices approved by management and permitted by your lease.
Never use an oven, stovetop, charcoal grill, or outdoor heater to warm your apartment.
Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly and report malfunctioning alarms immediately. Never disable or remove them.
If your apartment is not staying warm, please contact management rather than attempting repairs to the furnace, thermostat, or other building equipment yourself.
4. Watch for Moisture, Mold, and Condensation
Winter condensation can develop when warm, moist indoor air meets cold windows and walls.
Use bathroom exhaust fans during and after showers, where provided.
Use kitchen ventilation when cooking.
Wipe excess condensation from windows and sills.
Avoid drying large amounts of laundry indoors without adequate ventilation.
Report persistent leaks, damp walls, musty odors, or visible mold growth promptly.
Good ventilation and early reporting can help prevent minor moisture problems from becoming expensive repairs.
5. Prepare for Snow and Ice
Winter weather can make entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, and stairs slippery.
Keep entryways free of personal belongings, shoes, and other obstructions.
Use extra caution on stairs, sidewalks, and parking lots during freezing conditions.
Wear appropriate footwear and allow extra time when walking outside.
Follow management announcements regarding snow removal, parking restrictions, and vehicle relocation.
Please do not place salt, chemicals, or other deicing products on building surfaces unless authorized by management.
6. Help Us Keep Your Apartment in Good Condition
Your cooperation helps us maintain a safe, comfortable community throughout the winter.
Please report maintenance concerns as soon as possible, particularly heating failures, plumbing problems, leaks, drafts, and damaged windows or doors. Early reporting often prevents a small issue from becoming a major repair.
